The living room is the heart of the home— no doubt about it. It’s the space where your loved ones gather with you to watch films, play board games, and swap funny stories.
It’s important to make such an integral space live up to its own name— the living room. You want this room to be warm, inviting, and well, livable. (We joke, of course— you’ll want your room to be more than several notches above that standard.)
So, how do you do this? How do you decide what couches, tables, lighting fixtures, and other furniture staples to put in your living room?

What’s Your Concept?
A big part of crafting a cohesive living space in the middle of your home is deciding what concept you’d like to capture in that room. This all boils down to personal preference of course— any theme could virtually work, as long as you execute it with style and taste.
So, what will it be? Modern and chic? Monochromatic and minimalist? Artsy and whimsical? Rustic and quaint? Kitschy and fun? Retro and bold?
Whatever your answer is, it’ll help you in narrowing down what kind of furniture you’ll be shopping for. For example, if you find yourself gravitating toward a more colorful and whimsical concept, you’ll probably want to buy furniture pieces that reflect that— like a turquoise sectional couch, a crafty coffee table, unique lighting fixtures, and of course all the complementary art hung on the surround walls.
What’s the Function?
A key aspect of living room design that shouldn’t be overlooked is the question of its functionality— for what and whom will this living room be?
Do you have a large, bustling family full of rowdy kids? If so, you’ll likely want to accommodate that reality and avoid choosing delicate fixtures and easily stainable materials for your living room.
Or are your kids all grown up and gone, leaving you and your partner alone for the first time in your home of decades? Then yeah, maybe it’s time for a major 180 of a living room overhaul for you two. You can finally indulge yourselves with installing that bar or even investing in that expensive couch you’ve been eyeing for years.
Other things to consider are: How often will you host parties and large gatherings? Is this the type of living room where the family eats their meals? Is your household filled with big sports fans?
